Here let’s educate ourselves about what is COVID-19, what are the basic safety majors we can take to safeguard ourselves from this virus as well as what shall we do if it affects anyone of us?

What is COVID 19 (Coronavirus Disease)?

COVID-19 previously referred to as 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) which is caused by the virus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first found in Wuhan, Hubei, China in late December 2019 after which it has been out broken globally in several other countries majorly affecting Italy, Iran, and South Korea till the date. It is believed that the virus was probably originated from the Seafood Wholesale Market of China, later believed to be from the bats and also alleged that it is originated from Wet Market selling live animals in China.

World Health Organization officially announced Coronavirus a ‘Global Pandemic” from “Global Epidemic” on Wednesday 11 March 2020. This indicates the global spread of a new disease.

CDC states that the term Global Pendamic is used when viruses are able to infect people easily and spread from person to person in an efficient and sustained way in multiple regions.

WHO Director-General  Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at Geneva that this is the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus. He also urged all countries to take urgent and aggressive action to stop this virus. He further added that in the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries climb even higher. Dr. Tedros stated that the WHO is deeply concerned, both by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by the alarming levels of inaction by world leaders in response to the outbreak, we have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.

Dr. Tedros also indicate that the whole world is fighting against this situation and said that ” Describing the situation as a pandemic does not change WHO’s assessment of the threat posed by the virus. It doesn’t change what WHO is doing. And it doesn’t change what countries should do.” He further briefed “This is not just a public health crisis, it is a crisis that will touch every sector, so every sector and every individual must be involved in the fights”.

How COVID-19 can be infected?

COVID-19 spreads from person to person through respiratory droplets during coughing or sneezing. The time range between the exposure and symptoms appear is from two to fourteen days, with a median incubation period of 5 to 6 days.

What are the symptoms?

Common Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Dry Cough
  • Fatigue

Uncommon Symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Nasal congestion
  • Vomiting or/and Nausea
  • Sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, coughing up sputum (less common)

Severe Symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Multi-organ failure and pneumonia
  • Coughing up blood
  • The decrease in WBC (White Blood Cells)

Does a person die if he/she gets infected?

It’s not that every infected person dies. With supportive and intense care, people are recovering from this virus. The fatal rate is estimated between 2% and 21% (as per worldometers.info). From the happened cases, it is found that the time from the development of symptoms to death range between 6 and 41 days, with a median of 14 days. Among people who have died, many of them have preexisting health conditions i.e.cardiovascular diseases and diabetes and over the age of 60. The risk of death under the age of 50 is less than over the age of 70 as well as no death rate from 0- 9 years till today, as per the Worldometers. Though, that doesn’t mean young ones are completely risk-free. So, it is highly recommended to take precautions.

Most recommended preventive measures by WHO:

  • Avoid touching high touch surfaces in public areas unnecessarily i.e. door handles, handrails, elevator buttons, counter areas in public places, sink and flush in public toilets, etc.
  • Frequently clean your high touch surfaces in the home i.e. tables, doorknobs, handles, sinks, cell phones, light switches, toilets, etc.
  • Frequently wash hands with soap or hand wash liquid for at least 20 seconds with the correct technique.
  • Use alcohol-based sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol-based) in case of no hand wash and water available.
  • Practice good respiratory and personal hygiene.
  • Maintain distance from sick people or generally from those who are coughing.
  • Limit close contact when you go out in public.
  • No traveling i.e. cruise, bus or air etc. travels without an emergency.
  • Avoid the crowd and unnecessary meetings, public gatherings, and activities as much as possible.
  • Avoid misinformation widely spread through online/social media.
  • Avoid touching the face especially mouth, nose and eyes with an unwashed hand.
  • Cover mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing with tissues or bent elbow.
  • Use masks by the suspected ones and those who are nursing/taking care of them.
  • Avoid eating with bare or unwashed hands in public areas.

The best precaution to alert yourself: Always think your hands have a sh*t.

It sounds funny but it is the best way to increase your consciousness to prevent yourself from coronavirus. If you think your hand has a sh*t then definitely you won’t touch your face or any part of the body as well as anything unnecessarily with that hand. So, keep in mind that your hand is always dirty. If you go outside, and if you touch something then just think you have touched the sh*t, then definitely you won’t use that hand to touch anywhere on your body as far as possible and you will rush to wash your hand as soon as possible.

And, always wash your hand whenever you touch the banknotes and coins.

Money is frequently touched by anyone anywhere, even by the coronavirus patient and money goes around from one person to another one. So, money (banknotes and coins) can spread the coronavirus rapidly. That’s why it’s better to wash your hand or at least use hand sanitizer whenever you touch banknotes and coins.

What can be done if you are suspected or infected?

  • Self-isolation for fourteen days if you are suspected of the virus infection.
  • Follow CDC instruction for “how to take care of yourself at home” if you get sick.
  • Call your doctor if you feel like having symptoms.
  • Know when to get emergency help and get medical attention immediately if you have any emergency warning signs.
  • Frequently wash hands with soap or hand wash liquid for at least 20 seconds with the correct technique with water. The hand must be washed especially after going to the toilet, blowing your nose, before and after eating, after coughing or sneezing, when hands are dirty or when been in public places.
  • Wear a facemask and cover the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing.
  • Call the doctor or healthcare provider before visiting them.
  • Avoid sharing personal household items i.e. towel, plates, spoons, toilets, etc.

Who are at high risk?

  • Older adults.
  • A person with medical health condition especially diabetes, blood pressure, cancer, lung and cardiovascular diseases.

But, that doesn’t mean others are risk free. Actually, everyone is at risk and everyone shall equally apply safety measures at far as possible.

Is there any vaccine or treatment available?

There is no antiviral treatment or vaccine till the date but several approaches are being carried out by different agencies that are under development and several antiviral drugs are already in clinical trials. Presently, symptoms are managed with supportive care only. WHO also said that it did not expect a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 to become available in less than 18 months.

  1. Your post is very informative. It is a timely post. I wish more people out there could come across the knowledge presented here.

  2. People are running scared of this virus and standard stockists like local business and Amazon are running out of things like masks and hand sanitizer. So the black market fills the void.

There was a recent story about a guy in the USA who drove all over his state buying up all the hand sanitizer he could. He then started selling them on Amazon for $50+ a bottle.

That’s price gouging, and when Amazon were altered about his unethical sales practice, they closed his merchant account. Now the police have been in touch with him because, due to recent law changes to deal with the outbreak, what he was doing is now illegal, not just unethical.

Seems he’s trying to save face by saying he’s donating all his profits to help fight the virus.

Given that people are going to be house bound for the next several weeks to months and they’ll probably go online a lot to counter the boredom, lots of criminals will be taking advantage of them where they can.

Where there’s a black market, there’s higher prices and scams.

Thanks for this very detailed post about Covid-19 and the non-medical risks it poses to the unwary.

      Thanks a lot.

  3. You’ve shared some great information here, thank you. We are also experiencing the opportunistic criminal element – people offering to shop for those at higher risk (the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions) and then running away with their money. Shocking and extremely sad.
    Thank you again.
    Blessings
    Louise

  8. WOW, this was a thorough and highly informative write up of the Corona Virus (COVID 19) and the scams that are arising from it. I just heard some pubs in Galway Ireland maybe closing down and that may happen until like June / July. Insane.

Well I guess making these precautions is better than locking everyone in their homes until further notice. Seems like though every time this worlds applies some restrictions then not always are all restrictions are lifted.

That is what is concerning me. It happened when the Afghan war occurred and oil prices went sky high. They have never returned to normal prices and that is what I am talking about.

I have shared your article with my networks and I ask others to do the same for we all need all people to apply the information in this article.

Thanks De-Reviews for applying your talents to keep us all alert to this threat and how to prevent it in our own lives and others.

    Regards, Philip.
